Gluten free events are a great opportunity to meet other coeliacs and gluten free dieters, learn more about your favourite brands and sample lots of lovely freefrom products. There are a few gluten free events coming up in and around London, here are my top picks for 2014.
If you fancy gorging on the latest gluten free products, learning more about your medical condition and meeting a bunch of other GF people, this year’s Allergy and Free From Show is the place to go. Sponsored by Udi’s, this years show has an impressive line up of freefrom brands offering samples and shopping opportunities. There will be a range of talks and activities catering to people with gastro issues and food allergies, including detailed medical talks from specialists, as well as a set of free masterclasses aimed at health professionals to keep them up to date. If you are having niggling worries about the GF diet or are struggling to get a specialist appointment (my goodness, the waiting list), why not come along and learn more about it? For the kids there will be an Allergy Adventures section, with crafts and fun activities, and for the newly diagnosed and/or curious, Sainsbury’s will be putting on a selection of live freefrom cooking classes. A ticket to the Allergy show also gets you into the three other festivals happening in the building – if you are vegetarian, into organic produce or suffer from back pain, these may also be of interest!
Windsor Gluten free Food Fair
Date: Saturday June 21st 2014
Location: Windsor Racecourse
Roger George and Ian Severn have organised what sounds like a lovely gluten free day out. Coeliacs and gluten free dieters will be taking over Windsor Racecourse, and 30+ gluten-free manufacturers will be exhibiting their products, providing copious sampling opportunities! This event is to be held in conjunction with Coeliac UK’s Annual General Meeting, and the day will also include a coeliac-focused presentation from a dietician. The event exhibitors include some of my favourite freefrom brands (hey Isabels and Ilumi!), as well as many others that I have been wanting to try. Download the leaflet here for more information, including directions and a list of exhibitors. It is worth noting that there will also be a free ‘Coeliac River Shuttle’ to take visitors to and from the very pretty Windsor and Eton, so this could be a good chance to explore the area. If it’s good enough for the queen…
Perugia Gluten Free Fest
Date: 30th May to 2nd June 2014
Location: Perugia, Italy
Cost: The event itself is FREE, but unless you live nearby there will be Plane fare, accommodation, etc.
Ok, so this is really stretching the definition of ‘London and surrounding’ but in case anyone fancies a gluten free mini break, the Perugia Gluten Free Fest sounds like fun. With the amusing slogan ‘It’s all of your flour sack!’ (that must sound better in Italian) they are offering a ‘full programme of novelty’ with tasting tours, scientific seminars and debate, and ‘an international bazaar of the best gluten-free products you can buy’! You can fly from London Stansted with Ryanair. Though I speak no Italian and it is a bit far to go, I am tempted. Partly because Italian food is my favourite and partly because I had a lovely stay in Perugia a few years ago in this wonderful hostel, just by Lake Trasimeno. At the time I went, the owner kept a stash of gluten free pasta and treated us to homemade pannacotta!
For regular gluten free meetups closer to home, join The Gluten Free London Club. The group hosts regular gluten-free meals out, and I am actually going to my first one tomorrow, at the lovely Vozar’s in Brixton! If you are a Twitter user, it is also worth following @GFtweetup.
Are there any other GF events I should know about? Hope to see you at the next one.
