Niche – 100% Gluten Free restaurant in Clerkenwell, London

niche restaurant

Niche is a 100% gluten free restaurant in London, an independent haven for coeliacs serving ‘Best of British’ food. Located just down the road from Sadler’s Wells, Niche is nestled in one of London’s loveliest and poshest neighbourhoods. I’ve been wanting to visit ever since I read Wandering Gluten Freely’s rave review, and I finally managed it a couple of weekends ago with my friend Mel.

The Food

Deep fried gluten free things are still a novelty to me. As such, I feel duty-bound to try them all.

buttermilk fried chicken

the buttermilk fried chicken was calling to me. 🐓

I had the ‘NFC’ (Niche Fried Chicken). “Free range buttermilk chicken coated in millet flour spiced crumb, with aioli & BBQ dips”. It was divine. The basket is deceptively small-looking – you actually get a lot of fried chicken for your £. I love ketchup and mayo as much as the next person, but it made the meal a bit more special to have homemade sauces. I had a basic side salad with the chicken (not pictured), which was fine.

Mel went for a Chicken Burger with Superfood Salad instead of a bun (gluten free buns were available too), which got a thumbs up.

…Mel’s version was a tad healthier than mine.  🍃

The menu has a mixture of dishes…burgers, pies, salads, sausage and mash…there’s nothing especially new here, but I have no problem with traditional food done well.

Atmos & Pricing

niche restaurant 2

Niche is light and bright and clean, with some nice design and art on the walls. I found the atmos a little lacking, but it was lunchtime on a bank holiday. Our waiter was efficient but not the most warm or welcoming.

Most daytime meals are around the £8-£15 mark. Service charge is automatically added onto your bill, which is something that seems to be becoming the norm in London. (Jay Rayner articulated my frustrations with this rather well here.)

Would I recommend it?

Yes, for a safe and tasty gluten free meal. Though the welcome could be improved, the food was delicious, and there is nothing quite like the reassurance of eating somewhere 100% gluten free. It makes a huge difference to not have to grill the waiting staff on cross-contamination procedures, or mentally assess the risk of each dish. I really want to go back to try their parmesan and cheddar doughnuts!

  1. Glad you finally made it! I’ve only been twice so far this year (I’ve moved further away) and it hurts. Also, definitely try the cheese doughnuts next time.

The cheese doughnuts do sound amazing! Yes, hope to go back and try more – the pies also looked yum.

Do – it is so nice to be able to order and not worry about cross-contamination. Defo recommend the fried chicken. 😀
